About Halswell Residential College

The purpose of Halswell Residential College is to provide special education within a residential setting for students who need significant curriculum adaptation due to an underlying intellectual impairment and whose educational, social and emotional needs, including behaviour, cannot be met in their current environment.

Students will be in year levels 7-10 on enrolment. Enrolment at the College provides the opportunity for students to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will assist them to return to their community in the most effective manner, living as independent a life as possible in a safe and nurturing environment.

Halswell Residential College works to:

  • Increase learning achievement by providing a significantly modified/adapted curriculum programme to enable optimum learning to occur
  • Significantly enhance the student's personal and social skills and improve each student's ability to manage his behaviour appropriately in a variety of individual and social situations; and
  • Enable the student to be reintegrated into an age appropriate education environment and their home community

Halswell Residential College is funded by the Ministry of Education and is situated in the rural district of Halswell, ten kilometres from the centre of Christchurch. It has residential accommodation for up to a maximum of 96 boys, their ages range from 11 to 17 years.

Being a national school, Halswell Residential College draws from the wider New Zealand community. Within the College there is a cross section of New Zealand society encompassing varying family compositions, parental working environments and ethnic groups.

The success of Halswell Residential College in terms of positive outcomes for its students is due to the 24 hour programme, the specialist resources, the assessment and teaching combined with a stable and nurturing environment with the specialist skills, commitment and knowledge of the staff.

Halswell Residential College is not an 'institution', rather a Government funded boarding school for boys with special needs that have either exhausted resources in their home community or their community is unable to provide a suitable placement locally. Halswell College aims to return students to their home community when learning and behaviour has stabilised, following an enrolment period of up to 2 years.
