Residential Living
Students live in one of four Villas depending on age and capabilities
- Te Whare a Tauawa – a whanau villa for those boys for whom an immersion in the mãori culture is of benefit,
- Te Ara Villa a villa with an idividualised programe to best met the needs of the students.
Each villa being comprises of one or two dormitories, each accommodating up to twelve students in semi private bedrooms. Each dormitory has separate shower and toilet facilities. All villas have a separate medical room and are staffed 16 hours per day by teams of Residential Social Workers with Night Attendants supervising between the hours of 9.00 pm and 7.00 am.
Professional teams comprising one Residential Social Worker, one Assistant Residential Social Worker and one Residential Assistant work in shifts to provide day to day care in the villas. Each student has a Residential Social Worker assigned as his Caseworker who takes a special interest in him. The Caseworker’s responsibilities include planning and implementing Individual Education Programmes with the Teacher, writing regular reports, setting and executing short and long term goals and assessment and teaching of the residential curriculum.
Emphasis is placed on each Villa having a 'normalised' environment.
In addition the College has installed a sophisticated laser system which operates around each bed. Students can then feel secure that they are safe in bed and that any movement outside of the bed will be detected by the Night Attendant immediately. All movements are recorded independently by a security firm and also logged by the Night Attendants and cross checked.
A roving Night Attendant Manager is responsible for the students and Night Staff between 9.00 pm and 7.00 am.
