Matatipu - Pilot Project
Matatipu is a pilot project based at Hillmorton High School between Halswell Residential College, Salisbury School (Nelson), Hillmorton High School and the Ministry of Education.
This joint initiative between Halswell Residential College, Salisbury School (Nelson), Hillmorton High School and the Ministry of Education was developed in response to the high numbers of students who were struggling to manage a successful return to mainstream education following their time at Halswell Residential College and Salisbury.
The Pilot Project, if successful, would be the model for similar Transition Units in main centres throughout New Zealand. The aim of this project is to improve the educational achievement and outcomes of students by providing a transition classroom in a mainstream school environment.
Programme goals include ensuring students are:
- connected to their family/whānau
- are able to live independently
- are engaged in work or ongoing learning/training and their family/whānau are connected to Health, Community, and Support Agencies
- are involved in their community for recreational and social activities.
The Family Partnership Model is used as an enabling process for engaging and supporting whānau/family with their community.
