Enrolment / Re-Inclusion

Enrolment Period

Once a student has been accepted for enrolment, a Section 9 agreement is put in place between the Ministry of Education and the parent / caregiver, and the college initiate‘s arrangements to enrol the student. The date of enrolment will depend on;

•  an appropriate place (taking account of numbers and mixes of students) being available at the college,

•  the timing of the enrolment to take account of natural transition points for the student,

•  all relevant pre-enrolment assessments and forms having been completed.

A student is usually enrolled at the college for 12 months. Prior to this time a review will determine if;

 1.     the student will continue to benefit educationally from the HRC programme;

2.     the student has shown that he has responded to the HRC programme and it is believed he will continue to make progress;

3.     he continues to meet the criteria for enrolment (including not placing other students at risk);

4.     the student has reached a natural transition point for return to his home community, and would benefit from such a return.

A student who meets criteria 1-3 and for whom criteria 4 does not apply may be approved to continue at the college for an extra period of 6 months.

A similar review will occur prior to the student completing this 6 month period. The maximum time a student can spend at HRC is 2 years.

Reviews

Prior to a decision being made by the Principal regarding a student’s transition from HRC, a formal case review will be held, which will  include the student’s caseworker, teacher, parents / whanau, LABS team members and referring agency. Other parties, including college therapists working with the student and community agencies involved with the student or their family/whanau may also be asked to attend.

Support For Transition

In all circumstances where a student leaves HRC, the Learning And Behaviour Support team and the referring agency will assist students, their families and the receiving schools with re-inclusion. Liaison teachers are based in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch with the Learning Support Teachers and Family Support workers currently based in Christchurch.
