The aim is to maximise each boy's emotional, social and relationship skills.
The teaching of social skills is an integral part of the programme at Halswell College.

Emotional Awareness
Each boy should be developing strategies to cope with various situations so that he can to the best of his ability:
- Recognise and respond appropriately to basic emotions
- Demonstrate emotional self management
- Recognise his own emotional responses
Social Functioning
Each boy should learn appropriate social skills to a level where he can both meet his social and personal needs in an acceptable manner in a variety of settings so that he can to the best of his ability:
- Demonstrate social self management
- Recognise the appropriateness of his own social responses
Relationship Skills
Each boy should develop basic relationship skills to facilitate personal growth and social acceptance so that he can, to the best of his ability:
- Appreciate role differences
- Maintain appropriate social distance
- Develop appropriate mannerisms
