At Halswell Residential College, everybody has Rights: This applies to boys, staff and whanau / family / caregivers.
Boys :
Have a right to work, play, learn and live in a friendly, safe and helpful environment.
You :
- Have a Right to say No to touching that worries You
- Have a Right to talk to us about anything
- Have a Right to feel good about yourself
- Have a Right to ownership of your body
- Have a Right to tell secrets that worry you
- Have a Right to be taken seriously
- Have a Right to express anger safely
- Have a Right to feel safe
- Have a Right to our protection
- Have a Right to complain
- Have a Right to be heard
- Have a Right to information
Staff :
Have a right to work in a friendly, safe and satisfying environment.
Whanau / Family / Caregivers / CYFS :
Have a right to feel welcome, and to know that our students work, play, live and learn in a friendly, safe and helpful environment.
At
Halswell Residential College we all need to care about ourselves, other
boys, staff, belongings, our college and equipment. In order to do
this, we all have;
Responsibilities
Everybody who lives and works at Halswell Residential College has a number of responsibilities. Here are some examples;

- to make time for others

At Halswell Residential College, to help protect our Rights and to encourage Responsibility, we need to have;
Rules
The rules at Halswell Residential College are based on the following points:
- Abuse is not acceptable
- People & property are to be treated with respect
- You need to learn rules (and skills) to live safely in the community.
- Rules help you get on better with others and get your own needs met without hurting others or yourself.
- Society has rules that we need to learn to live together in a community.
The Rules at Halswell Residential College fall into three areas:
1. Treating people with respect.
This means:
- no verbal abuse of others
- no physical abuse of others
- no sexual behaviour affecting others
- being sensitive and respectful of others
- being honest with others
2. Treating property with respect.
This means:
- not abusing property
- using property for its intended purpose
- being tidy and clean
- only having or using stuff that you are allowed
